Noah’s story centers around his upbringing during and post apartheid South Africa. Born to both black mother and white Swiss father – an illegal combination under apartheid laws – Noah was subjected to racism throughout his upbringing in South Africa.
Born in South Africa
Trevor Noah pens in his 2016 memoir Born a Crime the story of his childhood under apartheid South Africa, where his mother Patricia’s mixed race marriage between Black Xhosa father and White Swiss-German husband was illegal at that time. To protect their child safely, Trevor Noah spent most of his time indoors while his mother made numerous attempts at dodging authorities for protection of her son.
This book gives an intimate view into South Africa, a country divided by race – white, black, coloured and Indian — where Noah lived under his violent stepfather Abel Shingange who physically abused both him and Fufi.
Noah rose above abuse and poverty to become a successful stand-up comedian, his journey inspiring audiences and serving as proof of the power of love through their strong bond with their mother whom he dedicated his book to.

Noah recounts his tough upbringing during and after apartheid in South Africa, detailing its languages and tribes, hardships as a mixed race child, as well as humorous anecdotes to lighten some of its more saddening passages. His autobiographical comedy book helps readers make it through even its darkest chapters with ease.
Noah’s mother plays an essential role in this book. As an active churchwoman who stands up to the system, she instils in him the values of hard work and perseverance while Noah recounts his adventures, including being forced out of a car driven by murderous gangsters.

Host of The Daily Show
After over a year of searching, The Daily Show has finally found its successor to Jon Stewart – South African comedian Trevor Noah will host Monday nights until the 2024 election cycle and then it will fall to Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, Ronny Chieng and Desi Lydic as correspondents to cover other parts of the week.
Reuniting Stewart with Noah marks a big win for Comedy Central and for him individually; critics have been highly complimentary of its new style of political satire under Stewart, but it did not achieve as widespread cultural relevance under Noah. Additionally, his one-man show has been touring throughout the US.
Noah is known for his realistic comedy and personal tales about growing up biracial in Soweto during apartheid South Africa, drawing upon his experiences growing up biracial. His book Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood was an instant New York Times bestseller and received the Thurber Prize for American Humor.

Trevor Noah began his career in South African soap operas and radio, before finding fame on the comedy stage. Taking to the stage on a dare, his talent quickly emerged as did his unique style; eventually in 2011 Trevor premiered his first standup special.
He has become one of the world’s most acclaimed comedians and hosts the Emmy-award winning Daily Show. Additionally, he has written and produced 12 comedy specials as well as his 2016 memoir Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood which became an instantaneous New York Times bestseller.
Noah is also an advocate for youth development; his foundation specializes in youth enrichment programs to ensure each generation builds upon those that came before.
