Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Struck the midway point of their three-night stand in The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on Saturday. The Grateful Dead tribute act was linked with guitarist Jonathan Goldberger during their second group and awakened with Red Baraat during their encore at night which also saw them serve up a set of workouts.
The five-piece opened up things with a Tom Hamilton led take about the “Stagger Lee. ” The conventional folk tune was followed by the surprise of the night since they found their take on “My Brother Essau. ” The latter-day Grateful Dead chestnut was last played back on March 17, 2017. George Jones nation classic “The Race Is On” came forward of a grand “Help On The Way” along with “Slipknot! ” Instead of shutting out the traditional trifecta with “Franklin’s Tower” that the quintet appeared to a different nation tune since they delivered Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried. ” A tender “Stella Blue” came ahead of a set-closing spin on the Americana-rocker “Brown-Eyed Women. ”
When JRAD arose to their second set of the night that they had been joined by Goldberger. Together with the excess guitarist in tow, they worked his way through an extended stretch of freeform jazz-tinged weirdness that eventually melted to the psychedelic-drenched “Blues For Allah. ” Last night marked the ring ’s moment ever attempted of this title track to the Dead’s 1975 record which had been sitting on the shelf since October 8, 2016. The today six-piece act then dug in on a fiery, must-hear variant of “Saint Stephen. ” “Truckin,” The Band’s interpretation of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” along with “Casey Jones” assisted fill out the rear half of the frame. The day-appropriate “One More Saturday Night” which featured the band jamming on Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” attracted the stanza to a conclusion.
Red Baraat, that performed an opening set in Garcia’so, worked their way through the crowd from the rear of the venue moment line-style to stage to find the encore going. An extended jam called, drummer Joe Russo combined in prior to the rest of JRAD emerging and Goldberger. The ensemble then lit to a raucous show-closing take on Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away. ” Watch pro-shot video of the opening song from every set Together with fan-shot video captured by Monica Hampton:
