Guitarist Billy Strings has a long history of performing with Greensky Bluegrass that dates back five years. On November 5, 2015, Strings and his band opened for GSBG, a feat repeated dozens of times since. Most recently, Billy and company kicked off Greensky’s September 15, 2019 concert at Red Rocks. The November 2015 show took place at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon when the guitarist was just 23-years-old. Billy sat-in with his fellow Michigan-based musicians on a cover of Keith Allison’s “Freeborn Man” towards the end of Greensky’s first set.

The Four & Eyes Of The World w/ Holly Bowling | March 26, 2016

Pianist Holly Bowling has been a frequent guest of Greensky Bluegrass. Bowling crossed paths with the quintet on a handful of occasions before she co-founded Ghost Light, a band that has spent portions of the past three years touring as support for Greensky. Holly sat-in with GSBG seven times this year alone. A stellar Holly Bowling/Greensky Bluegrass collaboration went down at the McDonald Theatre in Eugene, Oregon on March 26, 2016. The keyboardist emerged at the end of the second set to augment the five-piece on Greensky original “The Four” and a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Eyes Of The World.”

Yellow Eyes & Prom Night w/ Rayland Baxter | September 14, 2019

Greensky Bluegrass showed love for singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter by debuting a cover of his song “Yellow Eyes” at the 2016 Del Fest. The quintet first performed “Yellow Eyes” less than a year after Baxter released the original on his 2015 studio album Imaginary Man. Greensky covered the song occasionally over the remainder of 2016 and into 2017. Last year, the quintet had a chance to perform “Yellow Eyes” with Baxter when Rayland opened for GSBG at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado on September 14, 2019. Rayland handled lead vocals and shredded on guitar for “Yellow Eyes” during Greensky’s first set and stuck around to add to the band’s debut cover of Robin Davis’ “Prom Night.”

Atlantic City w/ Aoife O’Donovan | September 21, 2019

It isn’t often Greensky Bluegrass will play a festival set without welcoming a special guest and the tradition continued when the band made their FreshGrass debut on September 21, 2019 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. Greensky was joined by singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan for a trio of songs in the middle of their set. Aoife, the festival’s “artist-in-residence,” sat-in with the quintet on Greensky originals “Merely Avoiding” and “What You Need.” Then, as seen in the video above, O’Donovan led GSBG on a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City.” Both Greensky Bluegrass and Aoife O’Donovan have included “Atlantic City” in their respective live repertoires dating back to the early 2010s.
