Umphrey’s McGee got their At The Drive Inn run underway on Saturday from SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois near Chicago. The band treated the socially distanced crowd to covers from The Police and Talking Heads along with a bevy of UM tunes.
Umphrey’s kicked things off with “1348,” which saw guitarist Jake Cinninger extending a welcome to the first audience the band has played in front of since the COVID-19 pandemic sidelined live music. The song featured a driving jam, which saw some characteristic chemistry between Cinninger and guitarist Brendan Bayliss, before heading into “Gulf Stream.” Cinninger addressed the crowd once again and inserted some socially distanced friendly lyrics into the song before the guitarist reeled off a smoking solo in a triumphant jam. “Bad Friday” and “Seasons” followed ahead of a “JaJunk” > “Wife Soup” segment. After “Speak Up,” UM delivered the first cover of the evening in The Police’s “Synchronicity II,” which saw drummer Kris Myers showing off his pipes. Umphrey’s debuted the cover on Halloween 2019. The band would bookend the set with a return to “1348.”
Umphrey’s began the second set with “The Silent Type,” which featured a dark jam that saw Cinninger firing on all cylinders, building the song up to head back into the verse. Next, “All In Time” led into “Roctopus” followed by a tease of Gary Numan’s “Cars” ahead of the classic “Hurt Bird Bath.” “Booth Love” would find its way back into “All In Time” before the band closed out the set with Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy.” Umphrey’s McGee would remerge for an encore performance of “Remind Me.”
