Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir returned to the road on Tuesday night for the first time since the pandemic began to kick off a short Bob Weir and Wolf Bros run in Colorado at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison. A five-piece version of the group was joined by the Wolf Pack horn and string section at various points of last night’s show, including the Wolf Bros debuts of “Lady With A Fan” and “Terrapin Station.”
Bobby, bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and the Wolf Pack (woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and cellist Alex Kelly) began the night with an emotional “New Speedway Boogie” they worked into “Truckin’.” Next up was the recently revived “My Brother Esau,” the first in a string of songs played without the Wolf Pack that also included “Peggy-O,” “Black Throated Wind” and “Brown-Eyed Women.” The Wolf Pack returned to augment the quintet on the beloved “Weather Report Suite”/”Let It Grow” pairing.
The five-piece opened last night’s second set with a cover of Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee.” Weir then told the story of how he wrote the music for “Playing In The Band” after hearing David Crosby play the riff that starts the song during a visit to Mickey Hart’s ranch in Novato, California. The Wolf Pack emerged to perform the “Playin’” intro before the full ensemble lit into the Grateful Dead classic. Weir and his mates jammed “Playing In The Band” into “Uncle John’s Band” ahead of the “Playing In The Band Reprise.”
The Wolf Pack stuck around for a “He’s Gone” that bled into the band’s first ever “Lady With A Fan”/”Terrapin Station” pairing. Weir, Chimenti, Was, Lane and Leisz then went it alone for “Standing On The Moon” before the string and horn section returned for a set-closing “Sugar Magnolia.” Bob Weir & Wolf Bros along with The Wolf Pack capped the night with “Touch Of Grey” featuring the poignant lyric “We will get by, we will survive.”
Bob Weir & Wolf Bros head back to Red Rocks tonight before ending the brief run with shows at Vail’s Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater on Friday and Saturday. Livestreams of all three concerts are available via nugs.net.
