The Avett Brothers concluded a three-night stand at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Sunday with an assist from Jim Avett. Scott Avett and Seth Avett‘s father took the stage with the band for their opening song.
Seth Avett strummed guitar as Jim Avett, Bonnie Avett Rini and members of the group performed the traditional “Just A Closer Walk With Thee.” Scott and his father traded verses on the gospel number. Then, Jim and Bonnie vacated the stage and The Avett Brothers rolled on with a series of staples that included “Vanity,” “Kick Drum Heart,” “Who Will I Hold,” “Satan Pulls The Strings” and “At The Beach.”
The Avett Brothers’ 25-song performance continued with their first cover of Harry Belafonte’s “Jump In The Line” since March 1, 2020 at their last destination event in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. “Down With The Shine” came next along with “We Americans,” one of four songs from the band’s 2019 studio album, Closer Than Together.
From there, The Avetts stuck mainly to original material with the exceptions of David Childers’ “The Prettiest Thing” and traditional tunes “Black Mountain Rag” and “Old Joe Clark.” The band fit “Bleeding White” and “Laundry Room” between the two traditional songs and then closed out the set with “Morning Song.” Last night’s concert, and this year’s Red Rocks run, came to a close with an encore featuring a triple dose of 2016’s True Sadness as “I Wish I Was,” “Ain’t No Man” and “No Hard Feelings” capped the evening.
