Ramblin’ Jack Elliott Joins Bob Weir & Wolf Bros At Greek Theatre

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros delivered a performance at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California on Saturday. The band welcomed folk legend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott during the first in-person expanded lineup Wolf Bros in the Bay Area since the pandemic began.

Guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and pedal steel player Greg Leisz along with The Wolf Pack string and horn section — woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and cellist Alex Kelly — got the show underway with a funky, countrified jam that led into “Not Fade Away.” The ensemble then found their way into a fairly mellow, atmospheric “Cassidy,” which floated along on The Wolf Pack’s bed of intertwining horns and strings. The “Cassidy” jam was a kicked-back groove with some nice pedal steel touches from Leisz and solos from Tolling on violin and Sheldon Brown on saxophone before Bobby hit the final chorus ahead of the song’s conclusion.

The Wolf Pack would stay on to help Weir dust off the Ratdog tune, “She Says,” last played by Ratdog on July 11, 2014 at Red Rocks. Next, The Wolf Pack departed ahead of a trio of classics from the Grateful Dead repertoire in “Friend Of The Devil,” Bobby’s “Black-Throated Wind” and “Tennessee Jed.” Ramblin’ Jack Elliott then joined in and led the quintet on acoustic guitar and vocals through Jimmie Rodgers’ 1930 standard “Mule Skinner Blues.” Ramblin’ Jack included the number on his 1958 album Jack Takes The Floor and the oft-covered song has also been recorded by Bill Monroe, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and many more. Bob Weir and Wolf Bros would go it alone on the closing segment of “Weather Report Suite” and “Let It Grow.”

Bobby kept it cowboy to open the second set with Hank Williams’ “You Win Again,” a song that appeared in both the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia repatoires. The Wolf Pack then remerged for “Scarlet Begonias,” which kicked off a seamless section that included “Playing In The Band” (which featured elements of Miles Davis’ “So What”), “Uncles John’s Band” (with a “Playin’” reprise), “Estimated Prophet” and “The Other One,” which also saw “So What” teases. The Wolf Pack would depart ahead of the final songs of the set, “Standing On The Moon” and “One More Saturday Night.” Bob Weir And Wolf Bros and The Wolf Pack took the stage once more for an encore of “Ripple” and a reprise of “Not Fade Away.”
