The String Cheese Incident Kicks Of Red Rocks Run

The String Cheese Incident returned to Red Rocks on Friday in their home state of Colorado for the first of three concerts. The show featured a healthy mix of Cheese classics and newer tunes as well as covers from Talking Heads and more.

SCI got their Red Rocks run underway with “Shine.” Guitarist Bill Nershi and mandolinist Michael Kang came together for the song’s opening riff before Kang led the band through the song ahead of a joyous organ solo from Kyle Hollingsworth. Cheese then dropped into a jam with Kang soloing on his electric mandolin ahead of the “Shine” coda. A pairing of “Eye Know Why” and Newgrass Revival’s “Can’t Stop Now” came next. “Manga,” composed by percussionist Jason Hann, followed ahead of a pair of classics in “Restless Wind” and “Round The Wheel,” which led into “Beautiful” to close out the first set.

Billy addressed the “beautiful thing” that is the return of live music to start the second frame before SCI got spacey on the intro of “Hi Ho No Show” with Kang on fiddle. After running through the trancey bluegrass melody, Hollingsworth, Hahn and drummer Michael Travis preceded over a tasty electro jam before Kang manned the fiddle once again ahead of the song’s conclusion.

Cheese then delivered their cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” always a fitting cover for Red Rocks, which led into the mono-mythical “Just One Story.” The classic “Good Times Around The Bend” came next before bassist Keith Moseley led the band through “Joyful Sound,” which in turn segued into “Rumble.” A segment of “Black and White” and the favorite “Texas” brought the second set to a close. SCI would encore with “Colliding,” which contained lyrics from “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)” to close out Night One at Red Rocks.
