Widespread Panic ended a three-night stand at the ExploreAsheville.com Arena in Asheville, North Carolina on Sunday evening. The band worked The Rolling Stones and Traffic covers they hadn’t played since 2019 into last night’s setlist.
The sextet opened with “Coconut,” one of their oldest originals. Next up was a take on Talking Heads’ “City Of Dreams,” the first of seven covers performed by Panic in Asheville on Sunday. The band then raged through “Climb To Safety” before frontman John Bell shined on the gorgeous ballad “I’m Not Alone.” From there, Widespread played “Sundown Betty” for the first time since the group released the song as a single last fall.
Panic followed one of their newest originals with classic “Junior” and the instrumental “Party At Your Mama’s House.” The six-piece closed the set with a cover of The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature.” Last night’s second set began with “From The Cradle” and WSP’s first take on Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” since August 4, 2019. “Dear Mr. Fantasy” gave way to “Rock” ahead of “Saint Ex.” The sextet then delivered a “Surprise Valley” sandwich featuring covers of Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” and Skip James’ “I’m So Glad” within.
The +30-minute “Surprise Valley” segment was followed by a “Postcard” set closer. Widespread Panic then returned for a three-song encore. Up first was “This Friendly World,” a Fabian cover debuted and last played as part of the sextet’s Andy Kaufman-themed Halloween show in 2019. R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and actor Jim Carrey recorded “This Friendly World” for the soundtrack to the 1999 Kaufman biopic Man On The Moon.
Last night’s encore continued with “Down,” a song the late Todd Nance used to sing with Panic that the band busted out during this year’s Red Rocks Run for the first time since 2014. WSP closed out Sunday’s show and their three-night stand in Asheville with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” The band last played the Stones classic on March 31, 2019.
