Dead & Company continued their Colorado run with the first of two nights at Fidder’s Green Amphitheatre near Denver on Friday. Dead & Company Brings Fall Tour To Houston: Setlist, Recap & The Skinny

Dead & Company Brings Fall Tour To Houston: Setlist, Recap & The Skinny

D&C kicked things off with “Let The Good Times Roll.” As they’ve been doing since debuting the cover in New York City earlier this summer, guitarists John Mayer and Weir handled the first and second verses respectively while keyboardist Jeff Chimenti helmed the third. Bobby then took a short guitar run before Mayer took over and then kicked things over to Chimenti for a piano romp ahead of the coda and conclusion.

Weir then presided over a well-jammed “Feel Like A Stranger” that stretched to over 14 minutes in the second song slot. Mayer then grabbed the wheel on the rocker “Alabama Getaway” before Bobby took the Mile High audience for a ride on “Me And My Uncle,” which references Denver. Next up, Mayer helmed the blues standard “It Hurts Me Too” ahead of the classic “Ramble On Rose” with Weir on lead vocals which the band also stretched their legs on a bit at nearly 11 minutes.

Bassist Oteil Burbridge then stepped to the mic for “If I Had The World To Give.” The Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia composition was a rarity for the Grateful Dead, with the band only performing the Shakedown Street closer three times in 1978, as per The Setlist Program. Mayer then sang another Dead rocker, “Deal,” which contained a “Let The Good Times Roll” reprise to bookend the first frame.

More Skinny

A second set opening “Sugaree” saw Mayer handling lead vocals and also delivering some strong soloing beginning with a twangy affair before moving to more rocking stuff. The classic pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” followed before the band went deep on “Dark Star.” The first iteration surpassed the 16-minute mark ahead of a segue into “The Other One.” Drummer Mickey Hart then worked The Beam before getting into “Drums” in earnest with Lane as well as Oteil, who once again joined in the percussive outing.

The rest of the band trickled in for “Space” from which emerged a return to “Dark Star.” Bobby sang the second verse before the band headed back into “The Other One,” which also needed the second verse treatment. The favorite “Wharf Rat” fell in the ballad slot and nearly hit the 13-minute mark before D&C closed out the stellar second set with a spirited “Sugar Magnolia” that stretched nearly as long. Dead & Company brought the evening to a close with “The Weight” by The Band.

Dead & Company peforms again tonight at Fiddler’s Green. A livestream can be purchased through nugs.tv. View photos by photographer Jeremy Williams and watch pro-shot video featuring the first song from each set below:
