Jam titans Widespread Panic recently opened their vault for the 38th installment of the band’s Porch Songs live archival series. Porch Songs: Mobile 1996 features Widespread Panic’s October 5, 1996 show at Bayfest in Mobile, Alabama on 2-CD and digital.
Panic’s October ’96 performance at Bayfest was just the second show of Fall Tour ’96. The band opened with a cover of Taj Mahal’s “She Caught The Katy” as part of a first set that featured such beloved favorites as “Pleas,” “Diner” and “Makes Sense To Me.” WSP kicked off the closing frame with “Ain’t Life Grand” and worked both “Rebirtha” and the evening’s “Drums” segment within “Driving Song.” Other highlights include a “Weight Of The World” > “Low Rider” sequence and the “Help Me Somebody” > “Porch Song” encore.
“There’s no better way to put [it] other than the band was just ON this particular evening,” reads a note on the Widespread Panic Archives website. “Whether it was because of the high-energy Mobile crowd or just the buzz from the start of another Fall Tour (Mobile being the second show of the tour) you can feel the excitement on stage as the band plays its first Bayfest.
