STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — “You’re in hot water today, young man! ” my mother used to shout. I was in serious issue.
Possibly my proclivity for trouble inspired a passion for simmering in hot water, particularly when it’therefore out of a geothermal spring.
Through time, I’ve dipped my body into innumerable hot springs in Colorado and across the West. Strawberry Park near Steamboat Springs remains one of my all-time favorites.
I first visited the springs more than four years back if my stepdog, her owner and I were on a trip through the West. We parked our VW camper van nearby a gaggle of similar vehicles and headed down to join the tons of bare swimmers in the water.

Initially a homestead site, the land across the springs has been contributed to the city of Steamboat Springs in the early ’30s. Without a onsite monitoring, the springs became a tiger sanctuary in the ’70s.
“I guess that there utilised to be 300 teepees up and down the road,” says neighborhood entrepreneur Don Johnson, who first visited cross country skis. “Just about everyone who arrived here in the ’70s camped at the springs till they found jobs. ”
Recognizing they couldn’t correctly deal with the property, the town planted a for-sale hint. Johnson bought the springs in 1981, and over the last 37 decades, he has transformed Strawberry Park into an outdoor showpiece.
Reaching the springs requires winding through city and heading upward County Road 36. The final 2 miles are washboarded dirt. In the winter, chains or four-wheel drive with snow tires are required with major fines imposed on those who ignore this rule.
The 140-degree hot water flows in the Earth and into a set of rock-hemmed pools with a small creek. The flow cools the water into nice soaking temperatures typically in the 100- to 106-degree selection. The atmosphere is serene and tranquil, and although it is family-friendly, youngsters are expected to be silent and act.
Flagstone stairs and walkways provide access in the parking lot up topside into the soaking pools below. Guests in need of kneading can reserve therapies at one of those two massage rooms built into the hillside. In the summertime, a garden of flowers and potted plants line the route down.

While much has changed, 1 vestige of the previous times remains: After dark, if nobody younger than the age of 18 is permitted in the pools; skinny-dipping is discretionary.
It’therefore just like it had been back four years ago when I first simmered at the Strawberry Park Hot Springs, just today we don’t even have to watch out for the sheriff.
