Looking for a winter hike? Try these two trails in Estes Park

When snow falls in Estes Park and neighboring Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), there’s no reason to pack away the hiking shoes for the season.

Along the East side of the park which receives lighter snowfall than the West, almost all of the low-elevation trails are open for hiking in the winter. Some of them don’t require snowshoes or skis. So for those who want to hit the snow and log those winter miles, here are two great winter hikes in RMNP recommended by the Estes Park Mountain Shop:

Cub Lake is a moderate, 4.- mile hike that begins from the Moraine Park area. It’s a great trail for winter hikers because of its rather mellow terrain — the trail only gains 570 vertical feet in elevation from start to finish.
Bierstadt Lake is an easy, 2.4-mile hike that features mellow snowshoeing terrain with a celebratory lake view at the end. The trail begins at the Bierstadt Lake Trailhead on Bear Lake Road about seven miles from the turn-off at U.S. Highway 36.
