Warren Haynes Teams With Dave Matthews Band At Madison Square Garden

Dave Matthews Band Shut out a two-night Rack at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Friday. For the evening in a row, the Charlottesville-born group were joined by guests. Last evening they teamed together with their longtime friend Warren Haynes to get a takes “Cortez The Killer” along with “Tripping Billies. ” DMB also welcomed a handful of horn players along with guitarist Mark Whitfield to guest together throughout the evening.

The jamband stalwarts got their night going at The World’s Most Famous Arena with all the old-school “One Sweet World. ” From there the group would judiciously work their way through selections from seven of the studio records bringing takes on fan-favorites like “Everday,” “Do You Remember,” “Digging A Ditch,” “Don’Never Drink The Water” along with “Crash Into Me. ” Josh Faddis has been the first guest at the night since the trumpeter aided on takes of “Warehouse” along with Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer. ” A few songs later Whitfield appeared for “Captain,” indicating the next time he’s sat in with Dave Matthews & Co. this past year.

The biggest surprise of the night came soon after since Haynes was welcomed into the stage. Last evening was the first time the Gov’t Mule frontman has guested together since 2015. Haynes’ relationship with Dave Matthews Band stretches all of the way back to 1993 when he first sat in with them through a gig at The Wetlands. The augmented ensemble dug in on “Cortez The Killer” bringing an expansive spin on their regular collaboration choice. The Zuma cut obtained stretched out for almost 17-minutes and also marked the 11th time that they ’ve played the tune together. Haynes then stuck around for one more song adding guitar into “Tripping Billies,” indicating the first time he’s given to a hand to the tune Remember Two Things.

Saxophonists Ron Blake along with James Casey (Trey Anastasio Band) and Faddis assisted on the final two songs of this 17-song Major set. The meaty ensemble closed things out using the pairing of “Jimi Thing” and a partial spin on Prince’s “Sexy M.F.” Dave Matthews Band exploited “So Right” along with “Grey Street” to bring their two-night streak at The Big Apple to finish.
