Today marks Roger Waters’ 77th birthday. The legendary songwriter and bassist co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 and guitarist Syd Barrett, keyboardist Richard Wright along with drummer Nick Mason, together with guitarist David Gilmour joining in 1967. When Barrett left the band in 1968, Waters awakened as Floyd’s innovative pioneer.
Roger’s uncanny knack for seeing the big image set him as a pioneer of the concept album, beginning with 1973’s groundbreaking LP, The Dark Side Of The Moon, and ongoing with 1975’s Wish You Were Here, 1977’s Animals and 1979’s The Wall. But the time between Dark Side and Wish You Were Here has been a particularly critical period for the band.
While the launch of Dark Side propelled Pink Floyd to another level, that victory came with a price and also brought about a disillusionment of forms for the band about the music industry. The strain to followup Dark Side was also high. It was in this liminal setting that Floyd took the stage in Empire Pool, Wembley in the band’s indigenous London on November 16, 1974.
The concert kicks off with brand new material that the band was working , “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-IX). ” The suite would land on Wish You Were Here, together with the song and album serving as a tribute to Syd Barrett, who was fighting with mental disease. Floyd lasted with “Raving And Drooling” and “You Gotta Be Crazy,” equally tunes which were considered for Wish You Were Here but were finally cut from the album. Floyd then brings The Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety and cap off the series with the epic poem, “Echoes. ”
