Guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Jay Lane, bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and welded steel player Greg Leisz got the show together using the traditional opener “Bertha. ” Bobby such as a riffy intro into the tune before diving into the song which was farther countrified from the pedal steel stylings of Greg Leisz and a few honky-tonk piano out of Chimenti.
Weir then plucked out the bluesy intro into “I Need A Miracle” accompanied by “Loser” & &; ldquo;Ramble On Rose. ” Next, The Wolf Pack horn and string section featuring woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and cellist Alex Kelly assembled for “West L.A. Fadeaway” and would remain on for the traditional pairing of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint Of Circumstance” to close out the first frame.
The second set began with the quintet on Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” which saw Leisz delivering the pedal steel opening out of Haggard’s original version doubled by Bobby. Weir subsequently led the band throughout the poetry prior to taking a solo and falling back in the chorus ahead of the tune ’s ending along with a reprise of the opening welded steel stink. Weir subsequently picked up an acoustic guitar for his stellar solo tune “Only A River” off his 2016 record Blue Mountain.
Then came Bob Dylan’s & “A Hard Rain’s & A-Gonna Fall” prior to The Wolf Pack took the stage again for “Bird Song. ” Bob Weir & Wolf Bors and The Wolf Pack afterward delivered the “Terrapin Station Suite” in its entirety. The ensemble debuted the suite over the course of the Tuesday and Wednesday concerts at Red Rocks but the Vail display marked the first front-to-back Wolf Bros rendition of the towering epic. The Wolf Pack remained on for “Stella Blue” and the “One More Saturday Night” set-closer. The whole ensemble would encore together using the American Beauty preferred “Brokedown Palace” to wrap up the bewitching Rocky Mountain run.
