Guitarist Billy Strings composed the music for “Thunder,” a tune featuring lyrics penned by the late Robert Hunter. Strings unveiled official movie recording his band’s first performance of the song which came in Louisville’s Waterfront Park on May 22.
“Thunder” premiered earlier in May by Strings and Billy & The Kids during the second of three “Grateful Mahalo: Billy Kreutzmann’s 75th Birthday Pa’ina” livestream concerts filmed in Kauai, Hawaii. The guitarist shared with a note revealing Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann exploited him to create music for Hunter’s “Thunder” lyrics.
“I had been blown out of the air when Billy Kreutzmann stated he desired me to have a crack at writing the music to these lyrics by the late great Robert Hunter,” Strings composed in the note accompanying the movie. “I cried like a baby for just an hour after I hung up the telephone. I will ’t even remember a time being so overcome with joyful emotion. This happened on a day when I was actually questioning myself too. Thank you Billy K for trusting me . . It is seriously this honour. Hope we play with it at Red Rocks next month!! ”
Billy Strings reunites with Billy & The Kids along with saxophonist James Casey for Dead On The Rocks in Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Tuesday, July 13.
