Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Frank Zappa Cover At Red Rocks

Umphrey’s McGee Declared their three-night Red Rocks on Saturday. The group dusted off Frank Zappa’s “Dirty Love” during the encore.

Umphrey’s McGee — who premiered an Umphrey’s On The Rocks series earlier in the day that saw total group and Brendan + Jake performances (see the setlist below) — captured the day underway using a well-jammed “Nothing Too Fancy” that saw the group stretching out on the atmospheric opening section before biking through the composed sections. Guitarist Jake Cinninger would reel off some tasty tapping before the ring dropped back into the reggae portion which included Bob Marley “Rainbow Country” quotes.

“Nothing Too Fancy” would lead into “Push The Pig,” that found Jake hopping on keys. “Push The Pig” then flowed itnto “Out Of Order” and “Rocker Part two,” that saw a few more tapping wizardry from Cinninger plus a protracted closing jam to wrap up the four-song seamless set opening section. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss directed the group by “Intentions Clear,” that headed into the vibey intro into “Kula,” that escalated rapidly. Cinninger then handled lead vocal responsibilities on “Comma Later,” that saw the guitarist taking notice of the Red Rocks audience. UM bookended the set together with the end of “Nothing Too Fancy. ”

Umphrey’s delivered “Leave Me In Las Vegas” for the second time in 2021 to kick off the second set. Umphrey’therefore debuted the tune in 2009, as per All Things Umphrey’s, also played it once in 2012 before the tune saw a renaissance in 2013 but afterward was not played until this season at the band’s May 29 concert near Detroit. The ring is also including the instrumental on their upcoming studio album You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall & Left A Raging Bull and the group also introduced it as the lead only fot the record.

“Leave Me In Las Vegas” would segue well into “Mantis” before exploring a nearly 20 minute “2nd Self” ahead of a virtually equally grand “Bridgeless,” that included drummer Kris Myers bending the ring into a groove laced with a few synth in Joel Cummins because the rest of the band trickled in before a triumphant ending, even though it wouldn’t be the final of this tune for the day. “The Bottom Half” arrived next before a set-closing pairing of Gregory Issac’s reggae classic “Night Nurse” along with a return on “Bridgeless. ”
