Mario Rodriguez — also known as DJ Chonz — has become one of the elder statesmen of all Denver’s hip community. Throughout his career he’s selected tracks for KGNU’s app “Eclipse: Shedding of a Blacker Light,” worked extensively with KS107.5, has DJ’d all over the country and has started from many of the largest acts to come through town. Tonight at Denver he will debut his own community base at a launch celebration featuring De La Soul’s Maseo, US DMC champion DJ Rectangle, Phife Dawg’s DJ Rasta-Root, Cyber Kid, The Reminders and 2mx2. The whole thing will probably be emceed by Supernatural, who attained notoriety for holding the record for the freestyle up to now. The celebration is sure to be an acknowledgment of the finer components of hip-hop and a celebration of audio ’s power to unite and assist the community.
Rodriguez has ever been involved locally. His mom was a social worker and he remembers helping her at the food bank at Twin Parishes away Humboldt from a really early age. Charity was never considered off the desk. “It’s what you can do ” said Rodriguez. This socially-conscious strategy has lasted with him his whole career, helping to define his own business ethics and his character both on and off the atmosphere.
DJ Chonz was spinning records since 1993. His long and productive career in Denver has allowed him to experience lots of things that have left him feeling comfortable passing the torch and spreading the achievement. He also ’s shaken hands with lots of his personalities, even having the opportunity to watch 8 Mile at a screening in Puerto Rico with Eminem, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes and others. “I completed everything. I never cared for being a celebrity, I just wanted to mix on the radio,” he said. “I already shine dude. Other folks ’s excel is way more significant. ”
