Taylor Swift kicked off with a rare political post on social media, and in the American Music Awards she continued the conversation by encouraging fans to vote at the upcoming midterm elections.
Swift won four predecessors including artist of the year in the fan-voted series on Tuesday at Los Angeles, beating Drake, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons and Post Malone for its prize.
“This award plus each and every award handed out tonight were voted by the individuals, and you understand what is voted by the individuals,” he explained, “the midterm elections on November 6. ”
Swift declared on Sunday that she had been voting for Tennessee’s Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen, breaking her refusal to go over anything politics.
Voting was a hot topic in the AMAs. Host and Golden Globe-winning “black-ish” celebrity Tracee Ellis Ross wore a shirt which said, “I myself am a voter,” and comedian-actor Billy Eichner informed the audience, “The biggest election of our lifetime is occurring. ”
“Please catch your buddies and let them vote. Now’s the moment. If you think in equality for women, for those of colour, for the LGBTQ community. If you think that climate change is real and that we need to do something he stated onstage before presenting an award.
“And you’ll be able to visit Vote.org such as Taylor Swift told you to,” he added.
Swift created history by being the most decorated woman at the show’s history with a total of 23 AMAs. Despite getting the entire year ’s top-selling record and three No. 1 hits, Drake didn’t win one award. He didn’t attend the series but tied Cardi B with the majority of nominations walking to the AMAs.
Swift kicked off the series with an act of “I Did Something Bad,” while Cardi B — who won three honors — picked up the evening ’s original award, favorite hip-hop/rap artist, that she devoted to her daughter.
“I really need to thank my girl,” said Cardi B, that gave birth to Kulture Kiari Cephus at July. “I have kindly prove people wrong. They said I wasn’t going to make it once I had a baby. ”
The rapper hit on the stage to provide a joyous and colorful operation of her No. 1 hit, “I Like It,” where she had been united by J Balvin and Bad Bunny, that had been wheeled onstage inside a shopping cart. Cardi B’s husband, Offset of the rap trio Migos, danced together in the audience with group member Quavo as Cardi B worked the stage using lively dance moves, including the salsa.
Cardi B returned the favor, crying happily when Migos was called duo or band, beating out Maroon 5 Imagine Dragons, later in the series.
“We didn’t know we won at all,” said Quavo, also committing a shout-out to group penis Takeoff, that didn’t attend the AMAs.
“I need to thank you lady,” Offset said, pointing to Cardi B.
Like Cardi B’so performance, increasing newcomer Ella Mai additionally won over the crowd when she staged the entire year ’s biggest R&B hit, “Boo’d Up,” starting the operation as she walked down the aisle of the Microsoft Theater. Khalid, Quavo and Offset were a number of their audience members dancing along, while others staged and she was filmed by a few with their phones.
Others that shined onstage included R&B singer Ciara, that showed off her dance moves and has been joined with a Missy Elliott. The series closed with a rousing tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died in August. Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin and CeCe Winans were among the musicians that paid tribute to the Queen of Soul’s gospel roots and her iconic record, “Amazing Grace. ”
Rapper-singer XXXTentacion, that had been shot in June, was respected: He won favored soul/R&B album for his 2017 introduction, “17. ” It had been days after he had been named best new artist in the BET Hip-Hop Awards.
