Steely Dan played the penulimate gig of a U.K./Ireland Tour featuring support from Steve Winwood on Monday night at the SSE Arena Wembley in London. Winwood sat-in with Steely Dan, who later shared the stage with guitarist Elliott Randall.
Steve Winwood opened the night with a career-spanning set that solo material with tunes from his days in The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and a couple of choice covers. The Dan subsequently presented a two-song encore and a principal set. Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagen appeared for “Bodhisattva” and the rest of the series after the group covered Ray Bryant’s “Cubano Chant. ” Fagen went on to lead the group through “Hey Nineteen” and “Black Friday” before luring Steve Winwood for “Pretzel Logic. ” Winwood played handled vocals on the title track from Steely Dan’s 1974 studio record.
The concert continued with Steely Dan favorites such as “Green Earrings,” “Kid Charlemagne,” “Josie” and “My Old School. ” When the band returned for the encore they were united by Randall. Elliott famously contributed solos to the studio version of The Dan’s 1972 hit on “Reelin’ In The Years. ” He was encouraged to join the group but declined, though Elliott did play on 1975’s Katy Lied and 1976’s The Royal Scam. Last night, Randall added to “Reelin’ In The Years” before the “A Man Ain’t Supposed To Cry” finale. Watch fan-shot videos from Monday’s concert:
